Employees of the University of Lucerne receive a UNET account, which is used to log in to M365, webmail/email, Wi-Fi, and VPN. A Switch edu-ID is required to log in to various other services (see table below) as well as the Central and University Library.

1. M365, E-Mail, MFA

Task Instructions / Description
  1. Installing the Microsoft Authenticator app on your smartphone.

  1. When you log in to Outlook Web App or M365 (https://outlook.office.com or https://office.com) for the first time, you must set up multi-factor authentication (MFA). Once you have set up MFA, you can immediately check whether you have already received any emails in webmail.

2. Change the (initial) password for your UNET account

Task Instructions / Description
  1. You can change your initial password directly at https://passwordreset.microsoftonline.com.

Guidelines for the new password

  • Is at least 12 characters long
  • Contains letters (uppercase and lowercase). Do not use umlauts (ä, ö, ü, etc.), as this could cause problems in web services.
  • Numeric characters (examples 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9)
  • Symbols (examples: !@#$%^&*()_+-={}|[]\:;<>?, ./)
  • Important: Create a separate, strong password for each service (Webmail Uni, Webmail Privat, Zalando, Facebook, etc.).
  • The initial password is no longer valid after the password change.

If you don't have a password management tool installed yet, KeePass ( https://keepass.info ) is a good option for storing your new UNET password and other passwords.

 

KeePass is also preinstalled on all university devices.

 
 

3. Switch edu-ID

To access online services such as ZOOM, OLAT, or the university sports registration pages, you need a SWITCH edu-ID.

 

Do you already have a Switch edu-ID?

Then all you need to do is link the account to your university account. The data will then be synchronized with SWITCH. This takes approx. 2-3 hours. You can then log in to the web services.

  1. Log in to https://eduid.ch with your private email address and your Switch edu-ID password. Under Organizations, you can check whether you are linked as an employee of the University of Lucerne. If you cannot find a link, you can create one yourself on the migration website.

  1. Set up multi-factor authentication (MFA) on the eduID website (https://eduid.ch) under "Security." Activating MFA is mandatory for access to OLAT (https://lms.uzh.ch/dmz/).

    Important: The recovery code must be kept carefully so that you can reconfigure MFA if your smartphone is replaced or lost.

4. Wi-Fi UNET

Task Instructions / Description
  1. At the University of Lucerne, you can use the UNET Wi-Fi network with university devices.

 

The UNET Wi-Fi is pre-installed on all university devices.

 
 

5. Wi-Fi eduroam

Task Instructions / Description
  1. You can set up eduroam Wi-Fi at the University of Lucerne. Once set up, you can also use eduroam at other universities worldwide with your university device as well as your private device.

6. Access from outside Lucerne University and to ZHB e-media

Task Instructions / Description
  1. With VPN, you can access internal drives and services such as Abacus from outside the University of Lucerne.
  2. External use of licensed ZHB e-media (e-journals, e-books, e-newspapers, and databases) is possible for members of the University of Lucerne via VPN. VPN allows direct access to the licensed e-media offering, just like access on campus within the university network.
  3. You must confirm your VPN login with “Duo Mobile”, our mobile app for multi-factor authentication (MFA)!

 

University devices

FortiClient VPN (Business) is already preinstalled on all university devices.

7. Digital ID card

Task Instructions / Description
  1. The digital ID card will be officially introduced for employees and students on January 15, 2026. From this date onwards, physical campus cards will no longer be issued or replaced, and the new digital ID card will apply to all members of the University of Lucerne.

    The digital ID card is created by employees and students themselves via a web portal.

    The current physical Campus Card will remain valid until the end of March 2026 and can be validated at the validation machines.

8. Printing, copy and scan

Task Instructions / Description
  1. The introduction of the digital ID card will also change printing, copying and scanning at the University of Lucerne. By the end of March 2026, there will be a switch from Q-Pilot (printing solution with the physical campus card) to the new print management solution PaperCut (printing solution with the Salto badge).

    Multifunction devices with both solutions will be available until the end of March 2026.
