Microsoft 365 (M365) password reset
Instructions: Reset Microsoft 365 password
This step-by-step guide shows you how to reset a forgotten Microsoft 365 password at the University of Lucerne.
Please note
- Your M365 password is the same as your UNET or StudNET account. If you change it, you must enter the changed password in the eduroam WLAN.
- For security reasons, you should choose a strong password (combination of upper and lower case letters, numbers and special characters)
- Keep your new password in a safe place or use a password manager such as KeePass
Requirements
- An active internet connection
- Your email address (@unilu.ch, @doz.unilu.ch, @stud.unilu.ch)
- Access to your registered authentication method (Authenticator app, mobile phone, etc.)
Step 1: Open password reset page
- Open your web browser
- Navigate directly to the Microsoft password reset page: https://passwordreset.microsoftonline.com
Step 2: Identification
- Enter your email address (e.g. dominik.muster@unilu.ch)
- Enter the characters shown in the image (CAPTCHA)
- Click "Next"
Step 3: Specify the problem
- Select the reason for the login problems:
- Select "I forgot my password"
- Click "Next"
Step 4: Verify your identity
Choose one of the verification methods offered:
- "Text my mobile phone"
- "Call my mobile phone"

"Enter a code from my authenticator app"
Depending on your choice
- SMS: You will receive a code via SMS. Enter this code.
- Call: You will receive an automated call with a code. Write it down.
- Authenticator app: Open your Microsoft Authenticator app and enter the code displayed.
- Enter the code you received (example with verification via Microsoft Authenticator app) in the input field.
- Click "Next".
Step 5: Create new password
- Enter a new password in the "Enter new password" field.
- Confirm the password in the "Confirm new password" field.
- Click "Finish".
Step 6: Confirmation
- After successful password reset you will receive a confirmation "Your password has been reset".
- “Click here” to log in to M365 with your new password.
Possible problems and solutions
- No verification option available / password cannot be changed: Contact the University of Lucerne Helpdesk
- Code is not received: Check your mobile connection and try again
- Authenticator app does not display code: Make sure the app is set up correctly and your device clock is properly synchronized
